Lovely Working Gilfillan Of La Wood Radio

Lovely, working pre-war giflillan wood radio model 5s8 manufactured in 1940 by the gilfillan bros. Inc. Of los angeles, california.
This radio plays standard broadcast and the now obsolete police channel. This is an exceptional example of this beautifully restored gilfillan radio, with an outstanding walnut cabinet. The color and wood grain on this radio is magnificent, as well as the solid brass handle, original wood knobs, adn vanilla lighted dial scale. A great gilfillan desktop radio, to be passed on, generation to generation. Chassisthis radio has new capacitors and a new safe power cord was installed, resistors were checked and replaced if out of tolerance, tubes checked and replaced as needed. All moving parts were lceaned and lubricated. The radio was cleaned inside and out. Knobs and dial and tone button move as they should, and the radio picks up many stations across the dial, with excellent tone and volume. About the cabinet finishmy whole lacquer finishing process takes approximately 3 weeks, from the first coat of lacquer to the final rub.
I build up about 12 to 15 coats of lacquer over a week long period, with a light wet sanding using 800 grit sandpaper on every third coat. When i feel i have built up enough lacquer, i begin wet sanding with 1000, 2000 and 4000 grit sandpaper. I agani apply 3 more coats of lacquer, then wet sand with 2000 and 4000 grit sandpaper. I then rub out the finish with fine cut rubbing compound, and finally a super fine glazing compound.
oN wax. As you can see, it's more than an afternoons work applying a fwe zealous glossy coats of lacquer. And of-course, i use only mohawk professional grade lacquers on my acbinet work.
The results are magnificent- ending up with na almost glass like finish. Detailsthe original knobs and were cleaned and re-lacquered. The lighted dial scale is in excellent condition. The cabinet edges are clean and sharp, free of dents and nibbles. hTe wood grain is clear and crisp. The original grill cloth was cleaned and reapplied.
